The Apple tour is held during September and October when apples are being harvested. School groups up to 180 students can be accommodated at any one time slot. Each time slot is broken into four groups with two outside and two inside at the same time. The tour lasts one hour and the groups swap from outside to inside after a half hour.
The outside tour is a walk through the orchard with emphasis on the various types of trees and varieties of apple; pollination and pollinators; animals, insects and birds in the orchard; and issues affecting the farmer. For older groups, the tour can venture into grafting root stocks, grafting limbs and budding new varieties. As long as apples are on the trees, students are allowed to pick an apple.
The inside tour focuses on apple products and includes a taste of fresh apple, honey, apple cider and a dried apple. There is a demonstration of cider making and where students are old enough, they can participate. There is a discussion of the history of Johnny Appleseed, more on pollination and how fresh apples differ from some store bought apples.
Garden tours occur in June but both Apple and Garden tours can be scheduled during the summer for summer school and home school. Garden tours expand the apple tour by focusing on garden crops and show how different crops grow. There is no inside tour so the outside tour is about 50 minutes long. All paid tour participants receive a goodie bag at the end of the tour. Apple tours get 3 apples and an apple sipper cup or color book. Garden tours get 2 peaches and a color book. |
